Well here is the rest of the story, told in pictures. I followed the methods of FriscoBoater and everything went according to plan.
The durability of new gelcoat on the hull, vs the hassle to do it and the imperfect finish is still debatable. Next time I think I would investigate a paint finish....at least on the top sides of the hull. Original cost of boat, motor and trailer $300. Costs of materials and engine overhaul total about $2,000.
