Re: My fleet grew by another Tinny.. Mirrocraft center console resto

64 , I could do all of that, but I would always be wondering if water was getting in and ruining it again.

JB, that hull looks the same as mine. I'm guessing this era might have all been this 50/50 mix of tin and glasser. I always had thought Mirrocraft was of decent quality... must just be their newer boats.

On the positive side, all of the extras that came with her, the very nice trailer, and the engine should get me all or within a hundred or two of my money back. We can all learn from it, and I will resume my hunt. From being in her though, I REALLY want a working center console boat! :)

Sorry to see it go this way, but, an 18' CC will turn up...

*Jigngrub's buying, right? :)

Sure! Otherwise I'll flip it over behind the shed... I doubt I will cut it up for scrap, just salvage parts off her. But now I can go back to looking for a 21' or a 18'. My wife is being super awesome though, calling it a lesson learned for little only a little $$ and saying I can buy another! Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!!

I'm debating if leaving the foam is the only option shy of junking the project and buy a STARCRAFT instead!!

No way man, that foam needs to come out and there's certainly no need to junk it. Like the fellas mentioned, new fabbed alum stringer(s), flotation, sealed deck, run with it!:thumb:

At one time I worked at MirroCraft. In the early 90's. When that boat was built the "old" company had a bad idea that the foam would actually be structural and built boats for a couple of years using just the foam and not much other support for the hull. Was not a good idea and Mirro hasn't done that since> I think the hull was also .062 thick too. Nowadays the hull thickness is .80 or .100, or even .125 depending on the model. IMHO your gonna need more than just one stringer to support the hull without using the same kind of foam that was in the original design. Another thing that bothers me is the FRP liner, Mirro didn't build their glass shop until late 80's so I don't know where that came from. Strange,,,,,,,, Mirro did build some hybred tin/glass boats in the early 90's but the liner went all the way to the gunwale, and was mechanically attached to the stringer system, nothing like what you have there.

Thanks for chiming in! It looks factory, or a very old re do. It goes about 5" up the sides. I'm debating either putting in 2 stringers and about 8 ribs.... or salvage what I can and move on.

Thanks for chiming in! Here's a pic of the catalog page.. I took the pic from my computer so sorry for the poor quality. It states a glass flooring, mine goes about 5" up the sides http://m270.photobucket.com/albumvi...1900/2013-02-13_11-03-09_89.jpg.html?newest=1

Salvage and move on is my vote. Your wife gave you the green light to buy another one......so find a better boat.

Me too. That thing is like a tin boat without most of the benefits of a tin boat!

In light of GS's post, it sounds like this wasn't one of the best designs in the boating industry. I think it would be impossible to engineer a rib/stringer structure in the back yard garage for what is little more than a heavy duty tin foil boat. Welding and rivets will be constantly breaking and leaking.

In return for the Admiral approving the replacement purchase make her a nice planter for the back yard. ;) That way no one will be offended by taking the MC to the recyclers and will have a longer and useful lifer. Today is Valentines Day, dinner and a nice pressie is in order. :) Even if she didn't give the fore mentioned approval. :D

There is a worthy tin CC out there calling your name, 73.

Road Trip:whoo::bounce::party: If it's a Tinny

If the engine is the same year as the boat, it's another electric shifter (pre-'73).

If it makes any difference, I know someone w/ a free late electric shift Johnson 135 that you can have for parts if you just take it out of his (my) garage....

It was free, is free & worth just about what you (I) paid for it. Probably worth something parted out, but I haven't bothered yet.... No idea its condition, lower unit isn't installed , and carbs & coils removed, just the way it was when I got it.

Well, the Mirrocraft is now on her way to becoming beer cans... took her to the scrap yard today. An in case anyone is wondering just how much water can be in foam, the stripped hull (aluminum and foam only) weighed in at 1480 pounds!! Yikes! Weight from the factory was about 800 pounds, and I removed easily 150# worth of seats, wood, and fiberglass! After it was done, I got $175 for the aluminum... hopfully a few folks who post ads on CL that state "will sell or scrap in the spring" read this... not much $$ in the hull!
