Howdy:
I have recently purchased a 17'ft bellboy boat with a transom setup for an outboard. I was tired of looking at boats that are used just to hear that the soft spot in the floor is there to "cushion the ride in rough water", REALLY??? So rather than chance the fact of buying a lemon, I have chosen to do it myself. The person that i bought it from has already removed the old rotted-out transom and i am getting ready to put the new one in. The guy did a really good job, but i still have more removal, but before i do, i want to check the floor and all that is underneath of it. Issue#1: This a "web-cor" hull on this boat and i have no idea what i am going to find under the floor or what to expect. I have searched the web for days trying to find anything like a cross section view or someone else that has re-done one so i can get an idea as to what to expect. I have had a 1968 16'ft glastron redone, but was just a spectator and really wasn't involved with the entire process. This one is all me. I do construction for a living and have done that for 25 years. So i have general mechanical knowledge, and from what i have read and videos i have watched, it's just a messy time consuming job, that if done right, this boat will out live me. Issue#2: I also understand that the new transom board needs to be off the hull, and not sit wood to fiberglass. so...How much space should there be between the bottom of the new transom and the hull itself? and what material fills that gap? I have only seen this kind of work done on-line. I am tied up for the next couple of weekends, but i am just trying to get all the info i can before i start tearing into it in a couple of weeks. Please be patient with me, i am still learning how this thread thing works here in iboat.
thank you,
joe.............
