How do I fix my fiberglass motor hood?..with pics!

I know the obvious solution is to buy a used one off ebay, but I want some experience "glassing". I have some high quality fiberglass weave cloth and poly resin laying around. Do I cut out all the damage and form my own corner or leave the damage area to use as a guide and lay up over it? Any suggestions for this "mini" project?

for the money and time....buy a new one....

if you want to play.....grind off the paint and stickers....and use the old to follow the form and lines of the hood....you will need csm first then your roving....but csm will be the work horse here

I am a total newbie to glass work. This is what I have in the pic. It was bought from an aircraft supply shop for covering the hull of a homebuilt amphibian aircraft. What is csm?

CSM = chopped strand mat, a non-woven fiberglass mat.

The stuff in your pic is woven and looks pretty darn sexy.

At a 164 posts I can see you aren't new to iboats so I won't insult your intelligence. Take some time to read a bit of the thread from Oops! (first responder) and you will get a pretty good education on working with fiberglass and it will be a damn sight more interesting than classroom book learning. Hey! you might even learn words like "thixotropic". I think your motor cover is a good project to learn a little about working with fiberglass. Better than diving in with I got to figure out an entire hull fracture repair situation.
