Hey guys so im redoing my deck as seen in my tag. Now the porpus of this thread is to find out what supplies i should use i have found a supplier here in fl with real low prices and i mean real low but they dont have 1708biax wich i was planning on using on top so basicly my question is what is suggested to use here is all there stock w/o ordering and what do you suggest i use since i dont need a lot of strength

see i have a pretty good stringer set up

Here are the prices

the 50" roving -- 24 oz -- $ 2.13/ft
the 50" cloth -- 7.5 oz -- $ 3.50/ft
the 38" cloth -- again 7.5oz -- $ 2.88/ft
1 - 5g resin $ 119.60
>1 - 5qt cabosil $ 10.43
>50" mat 1/2oz $ 1.04 /ft
>50" mat 3/4oz $ 1.40/yd
That seams really decent right also what combination should i use them
My original plan was a sandwich

1708 biax
3/4ozcsm
Wood
3/4ozcsm

what should i do now?

Re: Fiberglass deck supplies

IMHO you need a minimum of 1.5 oz CSM on the bottom layer of all your wood. Precoat all wood first and really make sure the edges have no voids and are saturated well with resin before applying mat. ON the topside a layer of 1.5oz CSM followed by a layer of 1708 and then a final layer of CSM will make it bullet proof.

Based on your supply list substitute the 24oz roving for the 1708. But the 3/4oz roving is NOT enough. You'll need two layers on bottom and two on top and then add the roving and then two more on top of the roving. That's my recommendation.

Re: Fiberglass deck supplies

i just got on here.......what exactaly is cloth ?

cloth is a big word......there is some finishing cloth that is non structural,,,,,and wont do the job, even if sandwiched with csm.

those prices actually look high to me !!!!

Re: Fiberglass deck supplies

No because A. you dont factor in 50 Shipping and b. here is UScomposits which is what every one els has been telling me to go thur

3/4oz Chopped Strand Mat
50" Width
Same

1 to 9 Yards $2.65 Compared to 1.40

10 to 24 Yards 2.45

25+ Yards 2.25

and the cloth is part number FG-C0750
6.00/yd vs 3.50 if you just buy one foot or 5.00 yd if you buy 5+yds

404 Resin 153.00@ 5gal compared to 119.00
now granted the cabosil is 2.75 mor for 5qts i think its a pretty fare trade off

Honestly in actuality ill probly go thru both companys just becuase they would have to order the CSM they only keep a yard instock and use composits for the 1708 if they cant get it cheaper but for the 5gal of resin for 119 plus no shipping or 30 hazmat fee you cant beat that

Re: Fiberglass deck supplies

You quoted $3.50 per Ft for the cloth in your first post which equals $10.50 a yd. Was that a misquote??? And as oops stated not all cloths are created equal. You get what you pay for in some instances. With USComposites you KNOW what you are getting is quality material.

Re: Fiberglass deck supplies

Ryan, I would keep your questions in your original rebuild thread so it's easier to follow.

USC is the place to get your glass supplies from. I had nothing but a great experience with them.

& have you core sampled the stringers? Are they capped?
