I have put in my new deck coated in epoxy, 1708 and gelcoated. I am going to put carpet on the deck. My seat bases are wide. Can I install the seats on the carpet or should I cut out the carpet around the base and attach directly to the deck?

Penetrating a glassed in deck with fasteners is the main cause for deck rot in those types of decks. A glassed in deck will last indefinitely if it never has a hole poked in it.

Some people are gluing their seat bases and accessories down instead, there was a thread on here recently about it... but I forget which one it was.

Normally seat bases are installed right over the Marine carpet .. seal the fasteners well ..

If you don't want to put holes in the deck you can glass in two small pieces of ply, one on top of the other, to your deck and then you use that for a base to screw the seat base to.
