Re: bringing a 1986 bayliner capri back to life

thank you so much ezmobee, it really is a nice boat... the previous owner is a part time resident in my neighborhood (actually his house is in the background of the last pic) and he just wanted someone to use it

My family had that same boat new in 86. Fun boat but our force was always hard to start unless you had the touch. it drove my father crazy. good luck with the restore!

but back to the boat... if i could remove the rest of the flotation foam from the main hull area, today all that will be left is the bow section... so hopefully the rain will hold off for a few hours after work today.... i'll try to post more pictures too.

well, today wasn't as fruitful as i had planned....i had to cut the grass so that took up a few hours... but i did manage to remove the flotation foam from the starboard side of the boat before my neighbors showed up to drink beer at leasty he helped clean up... tomorrow i will try to finish removing the foam from the port side and remove the boxes in the bow area. i'm still on track to start the rebuild next week, so i hope that even if it rains i will be able to devote a few hours to this project.. i'll try to post some pics tomorrow

WOW !!! That's a wayyy Better looking boat than I was expecting when you first started your thread...

I'd say it's definitely worth gutting and fixing up...

If you can get the motor in good running shape, or keep it that way for what you've already got in it, you can probably do the whole thing, stringers, sole, even a transom, if it needed it for 1500 to 2000 bucks. That's just based on what I've seen others quote on here, and what I just spent on a little bit of fiberglass supplies. Keep in mind that those numbers would be "over building" it, or making it better than new. You could probably get away with way less, but That's your decision...

Keep the pics coming, and I like the photobucket thing, and youtube for videos...

If you haven't already, get into reading mode one day and peruse Friscoboater's Sea Ray resto thread. It will contain all the knowledge you could possibly hope for before you tackle your build.

Good luck...

Re: bringing a 1986 bayliner capri back to life

shades', wow, great work and for $300 to start. NICE!! i bought an 86 capri 17' in april for a grand and redid the whole intereior, seat frames, upholstery, carpet as well as replacing some rotted floor deck and having a whack at fiberglass work. it still doesnt look as good as yours but getting there. it also had broken skeg repaired and put in a new impeller. lucky it runs good. anyhow, im up to about $1650 what a project. still a few seat cushions to sew/make.

when i reinstalled the shifter/throttle lever and went to fire it up, i wasnt able to give it any gas in neutral - it would shift to forward and cut the starter atthe trans linkage 'safety' switch (its a force 125 so, im hoping you have some insight as to the set up for the linkage. thanks, kceagle

Re: bringing a 1986 bayliner capri back to life

shades of grey, I am just finishing up a total restoration of this exact boat that I bought new back in 1986. Replaced everything , stringers, foam, floor, seat pods, transom, bow seat supports, jump seat supports, upholstery, carpet, throttle control, painted boat (a little different scheme than original), dash components. wiring was still in very good condition, so no need to rewire. Its a lot of work to say the least. get good heavy duty rubber gloves, full mask respirator (Grainger), protective suit (found mine at home depot, paint dept.), good 4"-8" grinder, several grinding wheels, a ton of sandpaper, a sander, and have at it, and a boat cover, or a garage to protect your investment. I even purchased one of those 10 x 20 "auto shade' covers to work under, because I have no garage.

Re: bringing a 1986 bayliner capri back to life

Good luck to you on your restoration project! It will be worth it in the end. Trust me we just finished our 88 Bayliner and I think it looks pretty good.

Dont know if you plan on redoing your interior yourself, but JoAnns Fabrics has marine grade vinyl and you can get discount coupons for signing up on their mailing list. I got several 50% off coupons and it made a big difference on the cost. The only part of the interior that is a real head scratcher is the back to back seats! I did all the sewing myself, used the old ones for patterns.

We didnt put carpet back in our Bayliner, used Durabak paint instead. We like to fish a lot and you can just hose the floor down and its clean.

Again good luck on your project!

Thats a great looking hull man. I had to do floors and transom in mine a few years ago. I was going to do the interior that winter but still dont have it done. Mine is a cuddy inboard though. Keep plugging at her she is too good looking to stop on.

Re: bringing a 1986 bayliner capri back to life

once again life is getting in the way of finishing this boat ....i had hoped to have it in the water this year, but that's looking like it's not going to happen.... after work today (if it is warm enough) i am going to put down a coat of resin to make sure that everything is sealed...and then god willing tomorrow i can start putting down the floor. my new goal is to have everything sealed up so that i don't have to worry about for the long pa winter.

The weather is the biggest challenge now, I feel for you as I am north of the border and temps are dropping fast. I wanted to get more done before the summer ended . I am glad I put the furnace in the garage last year, it will help me along .I am looking at it now I have the winter to do a few more things and have it ready to enjoy next summer. You will enjoy the splash next year :) Good luck with the project.

Cheers
Jack
