I was watching SSTV the other night (why does he have to put a period after every word?) and they talked about scuppers. Besides being a funny word, the program piqued my curiosity. Doing some research on the net, I came across this site which seemed interesting, and since we have newbies coming in all the time, I thought this could be some positive educational material when rebuilding your vessel.

Re: Scupper holes

Awesome info!
And the number one reason I've seen...rain water has sank many boats!
This article points out that neglect is the number one reason.

Boats tend to be the testing grounds for owners engineering skills, adding PT wood, casting decks, storage boxes and countless other things that add weight to the boat.
Trouble is, people will tend to react rather than be proactive.

Reverse siphoning... many boats have this issue waiting to happen.
Plastic Fittings... many people take the short cut of cheap hardware.
Wiring... I've read stories 'here' where boaters had to 'turn on' their bilge pump when they had a problem!
