Cabin window re-seal

I have a couple of small, but annoying leaks in the side cabin windows on the Doral. The previous owner went crazy with silicone, looks like crap and didn't work. The plan is to remove the windows and re-seal them properly. The question is, what is the proper sealant to use?

JB,

Use Sikaflex 295UV or Sikaflex 296. It is made specifically for bonding windows to fiberglass. I have used it to re-bed hatch glass into hatch doors. This stuff is very UV stable.

I haven't dissected it yet, but I'm guessing it's plexi (or lexan) to the fiberglass with the extruded aluminum frame holding the whole thing down.

I have had good luck with 3m 4000 ..

Tape off, scotch bright or sand 320-400g your bond seam on the plexi/lexan .

Sand/prep All Caulk bed points is what I recommend..

They make black 5200. Pretty sure Jamestown would have it if iboats doesn't.

JBF,

Just an observation to point out. Yacht Dr is talking about 3M 4000UV sealant and NOT the 3M 4200 sealant we commonly talk about here in this forum. There is a difference. Just FYI.

Your correct and thank you for your observance.. I was saying 4000..not mispelled for 4200 :) .. I would see how that could have been passed off as the latter.

yup, I was in the autoglass business for a number of years and the urethanes we used were all suffixed 'UV' I've never done Lexan to fiberglass so this is a new learning experience. Can't deal with a leaky boat although it kind of helps me bond with my friends who own Bayliners (LOL) Thanks for the help guys
