Spar Varnish over Epoxy Resin for UV protection?

I'm considering brushing on a few coats of marine spar varnish on my epoxy-sealed transom wood(3/4" exterior ply w/ 2-3 coats of 2-part epoxy).

This is for my 12' aluminum boat "The Loon" and I just need some UV inhibitors to protect the resin from what I understand.

Any thoughts or experience with this?

If you want to see the boat there is a link in my signature for the thread. Thanks for any advice on this.:)

That's the right way to do it. Lasts much longer than plain varnish. Every couple of years all you need to do is a quick scuff and another coat or two of varnish. I think West has an article on it.

Yep. Here's the article:

That is what I did on my oak dash wood on my SS and it came out very nice.

Sounds like a good thing to do since the spar varnish has UV inhibitors. I'd just follow the directions on the can for previously finished surfaces.

Bob, did you stain the oak first or just go "au naturel"? Wait, maybe I should re-phrase that.:D

Thanks for the relies fellas, sounds like a good plan.

I will probably do the same on my dash panels and keep some wood trim exposed.:)

Good information, I coated my new transom w/Bondo resin/epoxy prior to installing. According to the article, even puting polyurethane on it will help protect it. I think I have some polyurethane in a spray can somewhere, that should work too.

Thanks guy's! Nice thread ......

I did a kicker plate with glass and gel if it works for your trans plate :)

Btw.. from what Ive heard epoxy then Varnish/Thanes is the Ultimate way to go.

The only drawback is if you ever have to get back to the wood it can be a real headache :) . I would still use this way however if it were mine...

Though Ive been having some good luck with Minwax Spar thanes .. HD if your wondering.

Nice work m8

YD.

Yeah, I have a kicker bracket that needs new wood as well. That is another winter project I will be tackling.

I do like the clean look of the gelcoat, nice work.
