Leaks in aluminum boat

Hey everyboby, I have done fiberglass repair for 28 yrs. Don't know anything about aluminum boats. I saw someone at a boatyard that I worked at in south Fl. use a black tar looking stuff to paint on bottom to stop leaks. Any suggestions? Thanks for your input!
