Re: '1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 BR - Deck, stringers, transom, custom interior'

Hi proshadetree and all the rest,

Here are some pix of the start for my 19' outboard. Hope this may give you some fuel to know that you are not alone. I have a few questions for all. I called the local coast guard and asked if I were to improve the strength of the boat, could I get the people (wt capacity) and Motor HP increased. I think he was giving me a line and said it is not possible.
1) Do any of you know if it is possible to get the sticker changed?
2) I was also wondering if any of you have looked into the epoxy resin on ebay at http://stores.ebay.com/Polymer-Products-The-Epoxy-Experts I read in some forum that it was not best to use poly resin and that the epoxy was preferred or are they the same thing?

lowkee what wt and type (woven/mat) of fiberglass are you planing to use? Also were you planning on reinforcing the walls and keel area with an extra layer of glass?

I am also hoping to get in the water by 4th of July

Thx and hang in there guys It will all be worth it.

lowkee, I'm waiting on those pics! I know how family has to come first and the boat gets neglected. Right now my problem is the weather. Been raining for a week straight and I just can't get the top off the boat and into the garage to start fairing. I don't have the old vpc "Tent" poles used on the boat before putting the hard top on it, so I have to rely on fair weather so the boat can sit uncovered for a few days. Oh well, it will get done sooner or later.....

Hey Lowkee, just wondering how your project was coming. I have not heard anything from you in a while. I have not posted anything on my thread either. I have been so busy, now that I had a week off of work it rained here for the past week. I do not have a garage to work in so that sucks for me:( All of us Bayliner owners need to hurry up and get finished so we can show off!

I too was wondering where you were in your progress... I got the engine re-installed, and half of the rear seat bases glassed in. I hope to be ready for carpet by the end of the weekend. But we all know hoping and getting there are 2 different things. Man I cant wait to get on the water.

Hope all is going well.

Wow nice pics. I wish I had taken more when I done my floor. Now I am having other issues and hope I don't have to go through all that work again. All last year I had a dry bilge sump this year I had to regasket the thermostat housing, found a leak on the cover plate of the cooling water pump and had to replace a bolt and regasket the back (5.7 mercruiser magnum) got that done and there is still another leak and I'm afraid it may be the housing gasket or a bellows cant see any water comming in and it isn't warm when I pull the plug out and drain it so it's not comming from the motor. hope I don't have to pull the thing too far apart. good luck and I hope you finish in time to get her in the water this sseason.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like it may be coming from your outdrive seal. (The big thick sucker that wraps around your outdrive against the transom.) I had to get one for mine because the previous owner though some rtv around the outside of the outdrive would fix the problem. Good luck in your hunt tswiczko.

Re: '1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 BR - Deck, stringers, transom, custom interior'

FINALLY back on the boat project! Okay, I chose to put it off (mostly) as I was more than a little worn out from the work and just plain baffled as to how to proceed with the stringers. I finally have a plan (and some new tools) and am full-time-boat-repair-guy once again!

Today I took some time to make a router table for my new Porter Cable 690 router. I also made a router lift for it, since it just seems dumb to have a router table and no way to adjust the height without crawling underneath it. The outcome was fantastic! I managed to cut the transom right before it got dark.

I also began using google for image hosting, so let's hope these images appear okay. Flickr just has too many issues, and I'm tired of it losing my image uploads mid-way after taking 20 minutes to enter descriptions and losing the whole shebang. If anyone uses a different photo sharing site and likes it, let me know.

Here is the update:

Transom%20and%20router%20table%20002.JPG

The finished transom cutout. Now I have to use my 3/8" roundover bit on the edges and bevel the bottom in order to fit the angle of the final transom. Then it's off to poly the layers together and glass it on

Transom%20and%20router%20table%20003.JPG

I used my new router table to cut the plywood to match the luan template. Worked like a dream!

Transom%20and%20router%20table%20011.JPG

I used a templating bit to cut the plywood to match the luan template I made. The original template was made using cardboard; It was then traced to the luan for the final cut.

Transom%20and%20router%20table%20012.JPG

Here you can see the luan and how seamlessly the new router worked. Very excited!

Tomorrow I'll be making the final cuts to the transom and hopefully doing my first poly mixing to glue the layers together. Nervous is an understatement. I've been dreading doing poly and glass work for months!

I know nothing about glass but I read in another thread that poly is no good as an adhesive......hopefully someone will clarify

I know I have read on here a number of times people are using PL const adhesive to bond the two pieces togather. Then once dry saturate the edges and surfaces well with the thinned resin to waterproof. Might be worth looking into as that method would be MUCH easier than the poly resin method. Adhesion wise I would say the PL would be much much better than the poly resin, as once it was dry those two pieces would be as one, you would delaminate the ply before they came apart. Hopefully others that have used this will chime in as to its value or not.

Ah! I like the PL idea much better! I already have plenty of it laying around. I was wondering about the adhesion, but couldn't think of another method. PL it is. Now to get some breakfast in me and get to work!

I just happened upon your thread. Very impressive! Trust me, Ive been there and we are really at an identical stage in our builds, only I have my transom in...ALso, had I not been using epoxy I wouldve used PL to adhere my two transom layers together. I LOVE the stuff. I have used it quite a few times and in quite a few different applications and it has performed flawlessly in every instance. I will certainly be taggin along through the rest of your build! I am hoping you have some good ideas on the swim platform so that I can steal your ideas and modify them to work on my own:p. Keep up the good work. You are now about to enter the FUN part of the restore world:cool:
