Now I have to tell on myself! Bought an automotive 305 oil pan figuring it was the same as a marine oil pan. "NOPE!" Without even matching them up I cut the oil baffle out of it and it still didn't fit. Different pan all together. Wasted my $50. "Haste makes waste." Where did I here that before?

Finally got the outer skin off as well as the Y-tube. Not the prettiest job but "Bubba" was there showing how to "get-R-done." Here's some new pics of latest demolition.

You go Boy! Jumping in for the ride. I love when they say "Nope, no way, nope, nope nope....." All the best on the job at hand. Keep posting pics and questions. Take lots of pics for later. If 1 way fails then there's always another way. Right attitude... Pullin for ya!

Yup, just like they said my gimbal ring mod wouldn't work. Years later it's still holding up fine and still no slop in the steering wheel.

Moving right along. Tomorrow I'll work on the gimbal housing and Y tube frozen bolts. Gotta get that housing off so I can clean the wood off the skin. The hull transom skin has to be salvaged so it can be used as a template for cutting and drilling the new transom wood. Also it will go back on the boat's transom and finished off.

This one lousy frozen bolt has given me "hell" for three days of trying make the Y-tube let go from the gimbal housing. Tried heat, pounding, cut head off and a whole lot of cursing!

Y-tube frozen bolt.jpg The one bolt has really been a night mare for me. Heated up the area and it still won't let go. Keep on having to go back and forth for tools cause the gimbal housing and transom cut-out are not at my house and my partners have pretty much wood working tools. Tomorrow I'll bring some sharp drill bits and drill down beside the frozen bolt to relieve surface tension, spray with some Blaster and hopefully with a little pounding the Y tube will let the gimbal housing fall down.

Question about Marine Plywood. It's my understanding that there are basically two different type of Marine Ply. One uses a better glue and cost more than the Marine plywood that Lowe's sells. My old '82 Grady doesn't have that many years left in her and am not going to pay for the best plywood. Approximately $60 vs. $100 per sheet and requiring two sheets. (Cutting corners to save some money.) I've already lost $15K over what the boat is worth. What do the resident experts say?

In truth, there is no rating for "marine plywood", it can be many things, although there are specs for certain plywood's used in the marine industry that a particular product would need to meet for certain applications. In general it means more plies and a water proof glue, the same glues are frequently used in exterior grade plywood, but there are different ratings for these too depending on the exposure level.

There are some very poor products marketed as "Marine Plywood" and many good ones, some are very rot resistant, others aren't (not being as rot resistant doesn't mean it's not a good product, it may have other very desirable characteristics), the typical product in the US is fir, with fewer voids and more layers than what the same thickness of exterior rated box store plywood would have.

So in your opinion where and what would you buy?

I use pressure treated KD plywood designed for use in the marine industry, it's what about 99% of the boat builders use now, that is if they still have wood in the boat.

Frequently cheaper than "marine ply" and will last longer.
