When you're standing on the bank of a river at the end of the summer and you can see the mud that's dried out and scaly that's what the gelcoat looks like on top of the cabin of my boat and its of course chalky so clearly very dry can it be rehydrated and saved with a product or does it need a new coat applied? Being as dry as it is i figured I would ask before I plunge into it and go the wrong way and create more work. Thanks guys

here is how you take care of it

step 1 - remove old gel with DA sander
step 2 - prep area for new gel
step 3 - apply new gel
step 4 - sand new gel
step 5 - polish new get

you cant uncook eggs and you cant save old and damaged gel

That's kind of what I figured, I'm glad it's just the top though it still sounds like a lot of time, sponge brushes, and sanding discs.
