My engine cover (cowel) is in bad need of paint, the paint has flaked off to the point where i can see the fiberglass mesh in some spots. What is the easiest/cheapest way to repair this? It does not have to look new, but I wish it looked a little better and I am worried that it is going to develop a hole if I don't do something.

Sand off old paint, primer and rattle cans is cheapest aside from using a brush.

Do I need to do anything for the part where the fiberglass mesh is showing?

I would have to agree with woodonglass about seeing pics first. If you have an electric sander, you should be able to smooth it out with 220. Just sand just enough to make it smooth and not make it too thin. Any and all flaked paint needs to be removed. You can use a chemical stripper but that sometimes becomes a nightmare to remove after. You can hide imperfections using rubber undercoating spray if your not needing a perfectly smooth paint job.

Hey there SeaBird. Mine looked like this:

and transformed into this:

I simply removed old decals, sanded entire cowling, primed everything several coats, sanded, several coats of rattle can paint (thin coats!!), sanded between paint coats 400/600/800 grit (wet) sandpaper, polished, applied new decals....done! Took me about a week to complete.

It's not perfect but huge improvement over original!

Looks awesome! Give me your address and I will bring mine over with a case of beer. :D

Here are some pics of my ugly OMC. If I get my hood looking as good as yours, I may have to paint the mid and lower units.

Notice the mesh showing through on the close ups...

OK, I'd recommend sanding her down with 120 grit . Use 3M Premium Marine filler (thinned just a bit with acetone) to fill any scratches and gouges.

Do you final sanding with 220 and 320 grit paper. Then use some SEM High Build Primer which will fill any minor imperfections. 2 coats. Wet sand with 400 grit between coats. Then shoot your final color coats. If you have a compressor and HVLP gun I'd recommend using Rustoleum Paint with the Added Hardener. Dries Fast, High Gloss and very durable.
