I've recently acquired my grandfathers boat and it needs a bunch of work. the floor rotted out so i ripped that up. as soon as i got the flooring up i noticed pieces of the stringer were rotted. I'm going to rip out the stringers and replace the wood and refiberglass them in. my question is, will 2-3 layers of 1708 be enough fiberglass for these stringers?

Wow thanks for the quick response guy! I will snap some pics of under the deck tomorrow and post them. I plan on using poly resin with 1708 and csm mat. Not sure really on what wood I am going to use. The homedepot by me doesn't supply marine plywood so I was thinking about using a good pine or Whitewood.

I'm open to all recommendations as this boat has a lot of sedimental value and I want it done right and want it to last a long time

so i went to my local home depot today and all they had was bcx. there wasn't anybody at the pro desk to talk to about getting acx so I'm going to go back tomorrow and talk to somebody during business hours. if i can't get acx for some reason would bcx be okay or should i not risk it.

for stringers longer then 8' is it normal to cut two pieces of plywood to length and lap them together or is there another way(since plywood comes 4x8)? my buddy has a woodshop so its not a big deal to make them I'm just curious.

OR Use 1/2" plywood and Lap joint them...three 8ft pieces will yield a 16' 1" thick stringer.

Yup, but in actuality,my drawing is BOGUS If you think about it, you only need to use two 8 footers on one side and on 8 footer and 2 - 4 footers on the other side to get a 16 footer.. Bottom line is...You get the idea!!!! I use Titebond III wood glue and 1 5/8" deck screws to laminate the plywood together. Makes some darn nice strong stringers using Arauco Brand Plywood!!!

Ask them what they sell the contractors for bathroom and kitchen floor underlayment. That's the plywood I'd use for stringers. It will use 100% water proof glue and good wood laminates. How much did you pay for the MG plywood?
