Styrofoam to keep it from sinking like a brick should something happen.

if the whole boat + a small outboard weighs in the area of 200 lbs, you need only 3.2 cubic feet of Styrofoam to keep it from going to the bottom.

You did a really nice job with the mockup. I can see you took some time to make it fit well. :thumb:

A little progress from this weekend. I got the front deck almost complete and about 50% of the back then I ran out of wood.

Ha Matt, very impressive indeed. Only thing I would add it water proof all the wood before wrapping it all up. Use either WOG's old timer waterproofing mixture or polyester or even epoxy resin to accomplish that. Then it will be there forever. But I like what you accomplished. :thumb:

My plan for dealing is polyurethane. I got som cans lying around from when I coated my wife's anarondak chairs.
Will that be good enough? Kind of a budget build so I am reaching for stuff I already have

Those are hot dipped galvanized brackets, I'd keep water away from any thru rivets in them or where the brackets touch the hull.

Esp salt water

Condensation too

jb, the only reason I didn't suggest doing that is because with a tapered hull like he has, angle aluminum will not offer a nice plat surface to rivet or bolt the floor in. If you drill the hull and use rivets to install angle aluminum, the angle will be pointing in the air and not flat level. Now if he can get some angles made to fit the hull taper and allow a flat surface for the floor, that would the best solution. JMHO!
A piece of 1.5X1.5 angle could be cut into tabs that could be made to contour to the hull amd then straight runs of smaller angle could be run tab to tab similar to Matts current wooden frame but lighter, rot resistant, w out risk of dissimilar metal corrosion and w better support for the plywood deck. JMHO!

I'd HIGHLY recommend you add some BLO and Mineral Spirits and do this...

would spray painting the brackets work? I understand the corrosion piece but its not like the boat will be submerged in water

Looks like an interesting post! I will be getting a 14ft V-Hull from my grandfather this spring, 25hp johnson! This is a very useful post! Keep it up and I learned alot from it so far?

I forgot about this thread but atleast now that I've posted I'll remember it,

to follow up on JB's post a guy with a jig or hack saw, hammer, and a bench vise could duplicate those galvanized brackets out of aluminum sheet pretty easily.

Galvanized stuff is hard to get paint to stick too, but unless you pull it all apart and spray the surfaces that touch the hull, painting wont help where it needs to.

Spraying the parts you can see now isnt what needs to be sprayed

Sorry for the delay guys.
Made a little progress over the last few days. So far I cut the decking out, waterproofed it, and am now in the process of attaching the carpet to it.
For those of you that haven't done this type of thing before, a little word of advice when making hatches for the decks. make sure you cut enough relief to allow for the extra material from the carpet or the hatches will not fit. I thought I cut enough relief by taking an extra 1/8 inch out from all sides of the hatches, WRONG!. Now I have to take the carpet off of the hatches and trim some more off. I'll know next time. I'm guessing that it will take about 1/4 inch from all 4 sides to make it work.
I'll have more on the carpet install on my next post (got to take some pictures)

Making progress.
Got the carpet on and the hatches for the storage compartments installed. I used some basic hinges from Lowes, only cost me about 6 bucks for all of them and I made a pull tab out of an old come-along strap and screwed it to the bottom of the hatch to make it easier to open.
The boat was wet from a fresh coat of paint so I had to wait to install the decks on the boat. Tonight, the boat should be complete. more pictures to follow

Matt, those look pretty nice. What did you treat the plywood with? You made nice fits with all the hatches. :thumb:

Well boys, here it is. The final photos with everything installed.
Thanks for all the help from the ones with the input, probably wouldn't have turned out like it did without your help.
I hope this helps others who are trying to do the same thing or similar to their boats.
Like I said before, this is my first time doing anything like this, I'm not a carpenter or fabricator by any means, just like to tinker in the garage on the occasion, so for the ones that think there is no way, think again. Can't hurt to try.
I'm open to any questions about the build and what I would have done different so just shoot me a PM or on the forum.
thanks for reading

Mattg, very nice. You did good. And never ever let naysayers stop you from doing what YOU want. There are always ways to do things. Again nice job. :thumb:
