Well its Monday might a week later. Rough week. Didn't really get out of bed until Saturday. Still sore but improving. Need less forum reading, more boat work!

Thru hull assembly is removed from donor boat. Have someone coming to pick up old hull saturday

Engine donor boat is gone! I put the boat for free on craigslist. 2 guys drove from Savannah GA with the sketchiest trailer ever and no way to transfer the boat to the new trailer. Removing the engine left a large hole in the transom. So we cut a piece of plywood and bolted it over the hole. Then we put the boat in the water and loaded onto new trailer. I gave them boat but made them sign a receipt so if trailer fell apart I wouldnt be liable for towing!

Good feeling getting rid of a donor hull ! One less thing cluttering the yard up ..
I just got rid of mine in a 20 yard dumpster .. Fit perfectly ! :lol:

Progress! Lyme disease still kicking my ass. Got some sanding done on the Glastron and shot a filler coat of gel on the transom.

Back to the old grind. Ground out shoddy repair full of air pockets in the bow. Ground out all seams from rear foam boxes and 90% of the floor vinyl glue.

I spent the $14 for a tyvex suit and it was amazing.

I too love the Tyvek suits by DuPont. The cheaper knock off suits just don't seem to hold up as well.

Oh the joy of grinding ! I used to tough it out with no suit but have since wised up ..LOL! A full face respirator for the grinding is another upgrade I made ..
Really worth the extra money to get one ...

Thanks for the kind words. Not really feeling better, just determined to keep this project moving. Tired of being sick, tired of watching tv. Want this awesome project to move from dream to reality.

Got a bit more done, mostly sanding. Shot another coat of gel on transom. Got the first part of the bow patch glassed in. 1 layer chop, 1 layer 1808.

After more sanding, I sprayed a coat of gel on the transom. Laid down very smooth. I could not get a good pic it was getting dark. Its very encouraging to finally be able to see a small part of the hull looking new.

I have been doing a lot of sanding on the hull. Also setup engine hoists and stands to allow access to the bottom hull. Grinding out lots of blisters and cracks in the gel coat.

You doing all the gell coat in different sections or are ya shooting all at one time ?
My attempt at gell was just kinda so so .. I think a dump gun would have made things much easier ...

Tip for filling all the V-Groove grindings. Mix up some cabosil with your gelcoat and make a Toothpaste mixture. Use a bondo spreader or plastic putty knife and drag it over them. Go lightly and "Overfill" them just a bit. Either tape over the entire area with Plastic or spray it with PVA to make the gel cure quick and Hard. Then sand with 180 thru 320. Does this before you spray the final coats. You'll never know the grooves were there. Make sure to clean well and wash down with Acetone prior to filling.

All the base coats will be piecemeal. Once everything is smooth, the final coats will be 50 gel/50 duratec. The sides will be separate sessions and bottom in 2 sections. I will use a body line to hide any blends. It has to be wet sanded and buffed anyway.

Gelcoat is very humbling. Spraying it to do touch up work is kind of black magic. There's not much info on thinning, duratec, acetone, styrene and other agents to add for spraying. The only similarity to paint is that you use the same tools to apply it. It had a very steep learning curve for me especially since most of the year is too hot to spray outdoors. I got lucky and met a marine guy that specializes in gelcoat repair. With his info and watching a bunch of YouTube videos. I think I did a pretty good job on my Correct Craft Mustang.

If you don't mind a lot of sanding you can spray two or three thinned coats. Then sanded smooth you can mix duratec with the final coat of gel and get a very smooth surface that requires a minimum of finishing. The main thing to remember is that you're not just trying to paint but creating a layer of plastic over the surface. A dump gun is great for spraying into a mold. It's also great for something you're never going to try to sand like a bilge. But unless you want to sand off 2/3 of what you spray on, learning to thin gel coat and spray in a 3 mm gun it is much more effective.

Another secret I learned is that you can keep the gelcoat in a refrigerator. The cold gel is much less likely to kick in your gun. Once it hits a hundred degree Florida boat hull it has no problems kicking off. I bought a cheap refrigerator and keep it full of all my different chemicals and painting stuff.

Wood: That is exactly the technique I used. I'm about halfway through sanding it all off. It shrunk a bit on me and I'm going to have to do another coat but it's working very well. Wish I had of thought of pva. I just used a little wax in the gel which it's probably going to cost me a little more work trying to add another layer. The indigo blue looks purple to me over the tan hull. Looks like I smeared grape jelly all over it.

So I flipped my first boat today.

Our first try ended in failure. We tried to just put a strap around it and roll it over. But with no cap it just wasn't going to happen.

So I thought about it for a little while and tried an idea I came up with. I got some threaded rod. Next I took apart my engine stand and bolted the main assembly to the transom. Took a little figuring out but I got it to work.

Then I took the boat up to the powder coat shop where my good buddy Richard used his equipment to roll it over. We used the crane to put a chain around the engine stand bracket. Then we hooked the forklift to the bow eye. We grabbed a couple guys from the shop and rolled it right over. We used Richards car trailer to stack pallets on then lowered the boat on the pallets.

It's ready to get pulled back to my house bright and early in the morning when there's no traffic.
