Hello Iboaters, I am not a newbie to boating but I just bought my first boat. Like most, I do not have a 100k to dump on a new boat so I settled for a project. And I found one (like there's a shortage). Its a 1990 Galaxy 228 Walkaround cuddy. Since moving 2 florida 2 yrs ago we have been discussing about buying a boat. After looking around for a few months and seeing some of the gold plated prices on used boats we decided to but a cheap project. And a project we have. I have been lurking in the background following other repairs and comments. So I decided to throw my project up here for all to critique. I am sure I will have questions along the way but I think I came to the right place. Well enough babble and on with the boat porn.

I will try and find a pic of the day I hooked it up. It looks different now than it did when I brought it home. Since then I have sanded off bottom paint on sides and gave it a sand and buff to see how well the gelcoat was. It looks good but bottom paint was hiding a few things but not to worried about outside for now. Hre are some more pics of the boat.

Welcome to iboats! Nice looking boat and trailer. Doesn't look like too much of a project. Just lots of cleaning, upholstery and refinishing teak. How does she run?

:welcome: You've come to the best place on the web for everything boating. Looks like a good project, and certainly a great candidate for a rebuild. The first thing that jumps out at me is the diamond plate patch installed under the captains chair. I would pull that up and check for a soft deck underneath. That plate could be hiding some real nasty surprises.

Thanks for the replies. And yes looks can be deceiving. I am a little ahead of the pics, but I will get the post caught up. Just wanted to start at the beginning so everyone see what have and what I am doing. The current state of the boat is no floor, no engine mounts, no transom, no bulkheads and stringers are almost out. TNS you are exactly right, the diamond plate was there for a reason( chair support). I will get this post up to date tonight after some work from home is done.

Well you guys have to appreciate this. The wife is even helping with the teardown. She is disconnecting the trim pump and power steering lines.

Outdrive is out. But I have a question. Is the safety wire a band aid or is it there for security?

I was debating on just running it the rest of the season until I checked the transom. I knew it was going to need replaced but when I seen how bad it was I did not want to take a chance. So out came the floor.

Then engine, gimbal housing, fuel tank and so on.

The Lock wire is a safety feature, so the set screw does not back out. Thanks for the picture because I forgot to take one of mine before I tore the transom assembly apart for rebuild. The set screw holds the end of the shift cable in.

That's quite a bit of progress you've made. The sad thing is most of us end up going way deeper into our rebuilds than we ever imagined they would need. It was a good idea to go ahead with your rebuild now. Running her for the rest of the summer likely would have done more damage to the rotten transom, and possibly damaged the gimbal bearing had the alignment on the out drive and engine gone out.
