92 Mercury Force 40 HP Water pump

I’m helping a friend with a cooling problem. No surprise, the impeller was pretty well shot, but we did not find any gaskets on the WP assembly either. We checked the factory parts list and it does not list any gaskets for the assembly. I find it hard to believe that they did not seal the pump plate and housing somehow. Did they use some sort of RTV on these components?
