I have an 88 Force 85HP that runs absolutely great once you get it in gear. PROBLEM: When engaging from neutral to forward or reverse it dies unless you quickly go to 1/2 throttle when making the shift. (this is not good at the dock). The engine runs great at idle and at any speed including idle once engaged. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. dd716ted
Have the exact same problem and motor, but mine is an 87. I hate to mess with the idle mixture screws. As you said the dock thing is tricky as my boat is in a slip as well.I would first recommend a de-carb treatment. Also, I just did a post for my 1987 85HP and someone suggested going to NGK BUHW plugs. He said its a good plug and he can get his motor down to 500RPM at idle with no stalling.Let me know what you find out and I will do the same.My e-mail address is stephenwinston@atrsearch.com if you find the solution. You can also send me yours so I can send you a resolution if I find out first.
I have the same problem and also contacted NGK direct. They do not recommend the plug you mention. They recommend the surface gap.I am goind to turn up the idel adjustment on mine over the weekend and see if this solves the problem.
