1988 force 15 hp- overheats and gear problems

I have a 15 hp force '88. It has some overheating problems. I know the impeller is bad,( I have the LU removed, I tried to force water into the system but it won t flow. Is there a thermostat somewhere? Alsothe linkage for the gears seem to be stuck. I can not move it by hand and dont want to force it. Does the drive shaft need to be spinning before it will shift? I dont have a manual

There is no thermostat on this motor.If the impeller was incomplete when you removed it (pieces missing), the pieces may be lodged inside the cooling circuit of the motor.Under normal conditions, yes, the driveshaft must be rotating, so the gears can mesh.It must turn to line-up to engage.
