I removed the lower unit to replace the impeller.I can't seem to find the magic formula to replace the lower unit. Any tips on how to line up the shaft or is this thing destined for the scrap heap?
What is the problem? Can't get the shiftshaft lined up to pass thru the top hole?I know getting the driveshaft, shiftshaft, and water tube lined up, can be a real pain in the butt.It was suggested to me, to drop a strong string down thru the shiftshaft hole, such as a heavy fishline. Tie the line onto the shift shaft and use it to guide the shaft thru the hole as you raise the lower unit. Of course this will be easier with an extra set of hands. Also, slightly rotate the flywheel, clockwise, to aid in lining up the driveshaft splines.
I actually just did this tonight. I had the same problem, except for it only lasted me about 10 minutes. We got a bright light, and shined it up. We peeked through the bolt holes to make sure the splines were lining up. But of course there were 2 of us, one to hold it, and one to guide it. Make sure the bolt holes match up as well as you can so you are putting in in there straight, or else it will be nearly impossible. As for the shiftshaft, you can move the lower unit around once you get the splines of the driveshaft in, and it will eventually pop through the hole.... at least mine did. Hope this helps...
Thanks... the trouble is lining up the spline I guess... I tied a line on the shifter... but the real hang up is the shaft... thanks for your suggestions
