Unhappy 1986 Force 125 died...now runs rough and wont start...

Someone please help. I was on the boat this past weekend and ran GREAT for 3 days. Well I thought. I put $170 in fuel in 3 days and ran about MAYBE 8 hours. That may have been my first sign. Sunday I was in a cove sitting boat was running fine... well did stall out when starting and putting in gear a lot. drove maybe a quater mile towards marina and motor started to jerk slightly. I was at full throttle and noticed if i pushed down on throttle even more lost power. Well quick bursts of loss of power persisted so I throttled down then boat died. wouldnt even turn over at that point. I got towed in and battery level was at 67%. I charged battery to 98% and motor started but runs SUPER rough and doesnt run long. the starter was getting stuck in the up position in the process. Starter was acting like it couldnt turn flywheel. I took off fuel pump. Diaphram is good. Replaced spark plugs. and made sure carbs were clean. I dont know what to do or where to look next. I have never had a problem with this boat till now. People have told me power pack...Is that the same as the coil pack? Someone else said change the starter relay. I dont want to get into changing everything. PLEASE HELP...

I'd do a compression test first to to make sure the motor is OK.

Sounds like you have an electrical problem as well.

The starter may just need the pinion gear and shaft cleaned. If it is dirty try using a rag to clean it and then apply some light oil very sparingly to the shaft above the pinion with a cloth. Too much oil can get into the rubber bushings in the pinion gear or enter the starter through the top bearing and cause problems.

    Good luck

The powerpack is the square box on the side of the motor. The coil is connected to the spark plug.
Like Two said,a compression/spark test is needed.
Sounds like it might have overheated???
Test the overheat buzzer.Key on and ground the terminal on the motor(orange lead).
Excessive fuel use is usually a wrong prop or overloading???
IF YOUR OUTBOARD DOESN"T START WITHING A FEW SECONDS THEN SOMETHING"S WRONG!!!!

Buy American made Cars and Trucks!!!Towing insurance for a boat,a GREAT thing.

If you fix your problem,do the rest of the posters a favor and send in one more post telling who, what, how it was fixed.J

Pull the hose off the recirc. system and leave unhooked and try again.
