I think the 1985 models has the water exit in the middle of the exhaust leg, should be a hole about half an inch in dia just under the cowl support. how long exactly is a few seconds? It may take 15 to 30 seconds for you to see spray out that hole.

Default 1985 Force 50 HP water pump questions...

Howdy, I have a couple of questions I need some help with. When in idle with water ears on the motor will water be expelled through the prop or is there an exhaust hole higher up on the motor? I did not see any water coming out when in idle. Will it not show until the thermostat open/engine warms up? I only ran the motor for a short time. The previous owner put a new impeller and seals and the lower unit oil was full and clean. I just do not want to hurt anything by not knowing what is going on. Thanks for help.

I have an 1986 85 HP and had the same question last year. I was told that no water will come out of the exhaust holes because it requires back pressure from the lake water to make it happen. The advice given to me was to put the back of my hand on the power head. If it is cool, then the t-stat is working. There is also a 1/4" plug at the end of my t-stat which can be removed and a small tube connected. This will act as a tell-tale (pee-hole) for the t-stat.

Thanks for the information. I will give it a try this week after I finish putting the new floor/deck, carpet and stereo in. Anything else I should check? I just got the boat and do not know when the motor was previously run. Lower end is full and clean. Fuel mixture is a little rich I believe ( I see a little fuel/water mix coming out of one of the weep holes around one of the lower end/leg bolts)since I can see some unburnt fuel. Otherwise motor starts on the first or second crank and idles perfectly. Plug is new and no visible problems. Once again thanks for the information for a novice motorboater.

I was reading a post about using a big buket instead of ear muffs. The guy who posted swears by it and it sounds like a great idea. According to him, it should give enough back pressure to make water come out of the exhaust holes. I plan to try it next weekend. here is the link to the post: http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ul...;f=33;t=005786

I have an '86 50hp -- With the muffs I can get no water to come out. I use a garbage can, and the water sprays great. Just be sure to keep the hose running because it empties pretty quick.
