I have a 92, mostly unused Merc 9.9 and put all new components into the carb as it had been in storage 14 years. Looks brand new.

Starts easy, idles beautifully, full throttle lots of power, mid throttle to slower it tends to run about 10 or 15 seconds and then sneeze/miss and pick up again to repeat.

Anyone know the basic adjustment that might smooth this one out? Or could it be something other than a carb/fuel issue?

Thanks

i bought a 1989 ranger bass boat with this 89 mercury blackmax 175 carburetor motor on it. before i put it on the water yesterday it ran great hooked up to the muffs on the hose. when it was in the lake it did not idle as good and is harder to start than on the hose. in neutral it would rev but not as good as on the hose also. but in gear it would just sputter and bog and then die when trying to accelerate hard or slow. the fuel priming bulb is hard when running. when you hit the enrichment button a few times while accelerating you can get motor to get going. it takes quite a while with the throttle floored and once you break the plane, it will take off like a bat out of hell. i also did the ohm readings on stator, trigger, and coils. the only ones that were low were the stator. they were to be within 3600-4200ohms. mine were 3450 on both the blue and red leads, and the blue/white and red/white leads. then on the red and black stator leads, and the red/white and black stator leads i had 7500ohms. that was supposed to be 9k-14k ohms. test readings are per my mercury outboard repair manual for that motor. all measurements were made with my fluke meter. i also put in brand new plugs before i ran on the lake yesterday. motor does sneeze sometimes as well.

i was just able to go back to garage this morning and take the plugs out and all looked clean besides number 3 cylinder. the plug had a bunch of carbon build up on it with only 2 hrs of running the motor, mainly at idle. i did also add a can of seafoam to 8 gal of gas if that helps also. please help.. what could be wrong? this is all the things i checked any other ideas would be great. thank you in advance....

not sure when the carbs were last gone thru. i just bought the boat before last winter and restored the boat and now trying to get it on the water after restoring it. i did notice the last sticker on the boat was from 2008. so it must have been sitting for 4 years plus.

i did compression check. 115 across the board
i checked timing and that is on
i checked the carbs are linked up and they are on
spark is very strong on all cylinders
i have a new prime bulb and hoses
new fuel filter
fresh gas and fresh quicksilver 2 stroke oil

Hi, everyone!

I just bought a small boat. The deal included two Mercury 20 hp motors. I've been trying to find the right year for the motors, but with very confusing results. Serial number 9160633 could be either 1977 or 1980-81 or something else. Serial number 2033674 is probably 1967 (same as boat, FinnArc 450), but also years 64, 65 and 66 are suggested.

So can anyone, please, help me to get started. They are such beautiful pieces and I'd like to see, if I could do something to get them back into action again (the newer one is running ok, but doesn't fit to the remote steering; older one fits, but has some problems with water pump).

Grateful for all information
Hannu

My 2005 25 horse mercury began bogging down and dying when accelerating and eventually not starting at all. I had the carb cleaned and the mechanic said that the compression was 115 on one cylinder and 85 on the other. He decarbed it and got it to 115 /107. It starts on the first hit and runs well but at faster speeds it will run out of gas and die. It can be primed back up and starts first hit. It will do the same at slow speed but it takes longer to run out of gas. It will continue to run and not die if I hit the primer bulb ever so often. The mechanic had put an inline fuel filter in the hose and I replaced the gas tank, hose and primer bulb new. Am I sucking air or is it because of the compression difference? The mechanic also said that this motor will not last long because of the compression difference and a 2005 Mercury was not rebuildable and would have to have a new powerhead. Is this fact?

I have a 1986 Mariner 20 hp that I've purchased last winter. I started it last weekend for the first time. Since then I've noticed black oil leaking from the prop area...

I did a bit of homework and read the following: http://forums.iboats.com/engine-freq...at-207285.html

To me it looks and smells like unburned 2cycle oil but not totally convinced. I didn't suspect that there would be that much... I did have the engine idling for a few minutes though...

I decided to remove the prop to have a look at the seal but I'm a rookie in the outboard department and can't tell if this seal looks normal.
