I have a 98 Johnson 115 on a Kenner CC. My pops had it in storage for two years. I took it out changed the bendix, starter, primer bulb, spark plugs. Boat ran great for two trips and now it lacks power, takes forever to get on plane but once it does it gains speed but not RPMS. It feels like the throttle only increases to 4000 rpms and then will not go any hire no matter if its hammer down. I've used sea foam and have been through 3 tanks so bad fuel is not the problem. It's also a two stroke that is oil injected. I know it's working because I've had to put more oil in it. Could this be a gummed up lower unit or clogged carbs?

This is a bizarre problem. Had the boat out on the lake for "sea trials" today. We had an issue with it staying running in reverse but it was ok in forward for a while. Once we got out past the no wake zone I was able to bring the engine speed up to 3800 RPMS and get 17 MPH out of the boat. That seemed to be pretty typical for a 24 foot pontoon boat sporting a 70. The problem came when we shut the motor down at the back of the lake for just a few minutes. It was hard to start and once started I could not give it any throttle in gear or it would die. We finally found a throttle position where it would stay running, at the "start" marking on the throttle lever, but only at 1200. Any more throttle and it would die. After heading back at 3MPH for 30 minutes we started messing around and found a very slight amount of choke (we had the cover off and applied it by hand) and the engine would pick up some and I could throttle up and run back at 3800. I experimented with it as this condition would make it very hard to recover the boat and found anytime coming off of idle when it wanted to die I tapped the choke switch (push in and release the key quickly) 3 times and the motor would pick up and run.

Another issue is when starting the engine and using the "cold idle up" lever, or what ever you call that throttle lever, it would take quite a while for the engine to build speed. My assumption was at no load the throttle response should be very quick.

This is a new to me 1977 Evinrude 70HP
New fuel pump
New fuel lines
Rebuilt carbs
new plugs
Compression 125 or better on all three
All three plugs were firing at idle but I have not checked it today.
New water pump
new Gear oil (not that that matters but....)

This is on a 24 foot pontoon boat that I've just finished rebuilding from the pontoons up. Today was the first day out on the lake.

When I first brought it home the motor ran really badly on the stand but after I replaced and rebuilt everything listed above it would start easily and seemed to free rev well. This work was done last November and the motor has been sitting on a stand in the garage until last week. I did not "winterize" it so the fuel that was in the bowls did evaporate but that happens all the time here in AZ and it's never caused me issues with four stroke motors of all kinds.

Sorry for the book but it's a crazy problem.

So I goot it home and took off the flywheel cover and saw magnet shaving. Took flywheel off and the stator was messed up as well. Well l got a nother flywheel and stator, put everyt back together. Took it out and it ran ok timing needs to be set just right though. So here's the problem. It shut down on me again, so I pulled the Cowen and the motor was warm but the flywheel cover was hot. So when I got home I pulled the flywheel cover and to my amazement the flywheel had magnet shavings again and the stator is messed up again. I notice only 3 magnets where chewed up. What would cause this to happen again. Any help in this matter would be great

Hey there, I have a 1993 Evinrude 150 Spitfire. Ran fine all last year. I started it up the other day to get it ready for Memorial Weekend after sitting all winter, and I heard a ticking coming from the engine after the fogging oil cleaned out and it was idling good again. After messing around a little while, I checked the compression and the bottom cylinder on the right side (if facing propeller) showed 0 compression while cranking the starter, and 40 psi with the motor running.

Since the motor ran fine last year, is there any chance that it could be a broken reed or a bad head gasket that didn't emerge until it sat all winter? Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

Hello to all,

I am the guy with a 2003 Johnson 90 (Bombardier) I am going to cut to the chase. After replacing the drive shaft seals, the prop shaft seals, and the the filler screw crush washers, my lower unit is still taking in water from some place. Vacume testing holds all day at 10-12 lbs. Pressure testing is holding with no leaks.....as long as the drive shaft is not disturbed.

In a previous posting, I stated that my drive shaft seemed unusually loose once the water pump housing was removed. I was told this was normal because I had a two piece drive shaft, and it was supposed to be this way. HOWEVER, I noticed that when I rocked the drive shaft while under pressure or vacume, the drive shaft seals leak air like crazy. I suspect this is the reason for my leakage. Problem is, I don't know where to go from here.

Can someone PLEASE give me some idea of where to start looking?

Thanks
PS I also noticed that I have a slight vibration at low speed. Coincidence?

Hello all,

Acquired a 3hp Lightwin recently. Model 3014. It wouldn't start when I got it, so I took the carb apart, replaced the float, needle, and low speed needle because it was damaged at the tip. Took it out on the water for the first time today, it idles nice and runs fairly smooth through mid to 3/4 throttle. When I open it to WOT, it begins to run rough, like the fuel is cutting out, and even vibrates terribly. Bring it back down to mid throttle and it smoothes out again.

Is this something that sounds like the ignition is cutting out at high RPM's, or might this still be a carburetor problem? I haven't touched anything in the ignition system yet, and I don't know the history of this motor, bought it off of Craig's list.

Thanks,
