Tach quit 97 evinrude Intruder 115

Can anyone tell me if this motor has a water cooled regulater/rectifier? I was having trouble with my tach not working and i saw a previous answer about tying the gray tach wire into the yellow/gray wire at the rear of the motor. Can i do this with my motor? Anyone know of any other ways to test the tach? I also saw a post about using a Radio Shack 25 amp rectifier for charging. Has anyone did this and how do you do it?? Thanks much .
