Post 2003 3L 1950 Bayliner Starter Solenoid Issue

Hi my solenoid on my starter ni my 3l 4cyl Mercruiser was sticking to where I had to tap on the solenoid to get the starter to turn. So I Installed a remote solenoid out of a Ford truck. The signal wire from the orignal solenoid was removed and installed on the remote solenoid and the main battery cable bypassed the factory solenoid and was ran through the new remote solenoid. I have done this same setup in cars many times and it worked every time. But in the boat when I turn the key I can hear the starter turn but It is not engaging to the flywheel. It just spins without the teeth engaging. Am I doing something wrong here or is the boat starter so very different than a car starter? Any help would be helpful Thanks Ali...

That's because your GM starter has a positive shift feature. The solenoid not only energizes the starter, but it physically shifts the bendix into the flywheel. Your scheme does not work on a positive shift starter. Install a new solenoid on the starter. You spent money on parts trying to work around what is a real simple fix. If you tried this scheme before you weren't working on a GM car. They have used positive shift starters since Hector was a pup.

    WORD.

Buy the right starter. It cheaper than you think and Mr. Goldberg (Rube) can be used another day.
