I want to check if the rpm gauges are working properly. What kind of instrument do I need and how do I connect it to the engine?

you can even rent them, or borrow them from AutoZone.

Ok I believe it is the same used for car's engine...am I right? How to connect?

its hand held. you put a reflective tape on the front damper pulley. works on any rotating equipment. you do not connect it.



on gasoline engines, the tachometers are triggered off of the ignition system. diesel engines are triggered off of either the alternator, a mag pickup, or a reluctor ring.
