    Default Mooring Whips

a lot of questions have been asked about these. the following video, of my boat. it is sustained winds of 40mph, as Gustav, passed by the Keys. this is a 4900 lb 23 ft Chris Craft Deck boat, using Taylor made Mooring whips. this is the 3rd year, we have used these in the keys, the boat has never hit the dock. this is for info.

Mooring whips required at my condo dock. I also have the Taylors. Other whips I see on the dock the fiberglass is shedding. I have also seen a few whips break in heavy wakes from passing boats. My Taylors are perfect and my boat never comes close to the dock. If you dock in a high wake or wind area get a set of whips one size larger than what your boat requires. Whips should always be installed thru bolted with a backer plate. Never just into the dock planks with lag bolts as the planks will simply work loose with the wave/wind rocking. I did install mine with lag bolts but I have two extra long bolts going into the dock framing and two going thru the plank. I then put extra stainless screws into the planks to make sure there is no way they can work loose from the framing. My boat is not going anywhere unless my lines break. Speaking of which the 8 plait (sp) line is above and beyond all other types of lines for your whips. It won't easily chaff and it has some shock absorption qualities.
