Does anyone know if there is a kit (OEM or aftermarket) or technique to add a safety/kill/deadman's switch to a '78 Johnson 140HP on my 17' bass boat? It dawned on me today as I was WOT alone that it would be a good idea to have one. Thanks.

Your Johnson shuts down the motor by grounding the coils. Wire in a kill switch (Normally open) that will apply a ground to the coils when pulled. The ignition switch will open the ground loop when you are running, simply introduce the ground back in with the kill switch...
There is also an aftermarket kill switch that has the ignition wire from the key run to it.
It is in normally closed loop mode with the cord intact and when removed, it opens the circuit, killing the engine. It's available online.

Something tells me I should be on the water....
If I answer your upholstery questions, it's only because I've been doing it 20+ years...
Thanks for the responses.

I am out a lot by myself on my boat. I never wore the lanyard. I bought an AUTOTETHER. It is a wireless lanyard. I actually use it.
