1972 aluminum Starcraft 16'

I have a 1972 Starcraft 16' runabout. If you are standing in the boat looking out the back at the transom, there is a small section 6" or so of exposed plywood. This section is weathered by the sun. I put some exterior paint on it to seal it. Do not know if it really helped much. The transom is solid and I want to keep it that way. What can I seal this wood with? Do I have to sand off the paint befor I seal it?

I Need/want to paint my boat. I want it to look ok it is a family fun/fishing boat. Much of the paint is chipped off. It was white. What are my options as far as paint goes? Does it have to be a marine paint?

I bought a 16ft aluminum starcraft myself last week, and i too am interested in repainting.
i was also wondering where i might look to identify it, as the plate is faded beyond legibility and the registration number turns up nothing.

I merged your threads to keep things consolidated.

That 6" strip is exposed on the inside of the splashwell. You can sand it and paint it/seal it up which is a good idea.

Since you are in the re-build mode........ check for rot where your motor mounting bolts pass through the plywood.

Yes, for painting the hull.......... scuff the old paint, use rustoleum or valspar enamel and the roll and tip method. You could if you want just touch up the chips with regular enamel paint but all the bare aluminum needs to be sanded and primed with a self etching primer.
