1967 Crestliner rebuild Update 08/16/09

I am the proud new owner of a project. Thought I'd post the start pics of my newly aquired boat. I think it's a flying crest, but if there is anyone that knows please chime in. Here is the story of how it came to be:

I got the motor running good today, so I'm going start stripping the stuff off to get ready for paint.

So far it's good news. The transon seems very solid, I was able to stand on the cavitation plate and there was no flex at all. I weigh 190lb. Got the motor off the boat w/o to much trouble. I'll have to rent a cherry picker for sure to get in back on though. That thing is a hunk of steel.

Got all the parts stripped off. Now the project will be on hold for a week or 2. Had to have shoulder surgery this morning.

Man that sucks hope you heal up soon so you can get back to her . I know it will be hard looking at her sittin there waiting for paint .

After being bored outta my head laying aroung the house for 5 days I thought I might give sanding a try. Was able to get the outside of the boat done as far as the disc sander will do. Still alot of nooks and crannys for hand sanding left, then I can move to the inside. All this off time has giving time to think about interior design though. Pretty well have that fugured out. This thing darn near has purlins for stringers. Anyhow the stringers are 10" apart. I'm going to put the pink foam in the 4 outer stringers. The center stringer will be a rod/ski locker. The front seats will be pedestal style but they will be mounted on boxes for storage. It's getting there slowly.

Things must be moving along, the reciepts are adding up. Gonna try and keep a record here of the costs and see what it takes to get this thing done. Bought all the paint and supplies today so maybe I'll have primered by sunday.

Ok I am at a loss here is that an Aluminum hull with a fiberglass cap on it it sure looks like it .

Looks all aluminum to me...notice the right angles on the cap/gunwhales, no smooth rounded surfaces like you see in glass boats. Nice rig, you're making good progress...did you get the full-meal rotator cuff deal on your shoulder? Been there, done that...two years post-op at this point...still have the scars and PT t-shirts to remind me. Was worth it though...now I'm wondering about the right shoulder. My medical delay slowed/delayed my boat resto project by about 6 months. Lay out a plan and follow it in logical steps.

It's all aluminum. All the sanding is done now. Have to wait for a good time to prime it.

Rotator cuff was good, Tore the cartlige and the bicep tendon. So they had to go into the bicep to fish it out, cut the entire tendon off and reattach it a different spot.

OUUUUCH. Ok back to the boat Kewl I didnt know Crestliner did Tin Cans . The Zinc doesnt have to go on heavy just needs a light coat of it . and really only where you have bare spots.

Got the first coat of color on today and I could just kick myself. Why didn't I buy a HLVP gun before instead od messing with that siphon feed all these years? The only thing I could compare it to was when I finnaly gave up my buzz box for a wire feed welder. All of the sudden you say "this is what I've been missing. Any how the first coat of white went on and it turned out great. I hate that I have to wait 24 hrs between coats but I will be patient.

LOL Looks good Lion hunter . So you broke down and went to harbor fleight huh . That is my favorite chinese tool store LOL. I understand the 24 Hour thing been driving me batty especially with the rin here lately . I am lacking one cot of paint on the sides of mine and cant get the rain to stop long enough to get it done so I can move on .

We don't have a harbor freight here, so being impateint I went to the HD. Paid double but I couldn't wait. I'm going to try and get all the white done by Thursday so I can let it dry for a day before I tape it off for the blue. Think 3 coats is enough? I got 3 coats of primer (1 zinc and 2 of the other). Then on to the floor. I've been thinking of using porch paint with some sand in it. If it doesn't work out I can always get vinyl later. The original vinyl in it was in perfect condition but the staples had rusted. So rather than pull staples the PO just cut and ripped the vinyl off.

3 coats should be plenty . I am overkilling mine honestly with as many coats s I am putting on . I will warn you on the tape be carefull with that stuff . As soon as the blue tacks off get the tape off the boat .

I've been using the the blue "delicate" tape for fresh painted surfaces. Barely sticks and I have never peeled paint with it like the other blue stuff.

Hmmmmmm not sure which Blue tape I have but I may have to go take a look for this " delicate " tape before I go to redo my stripes ( that is if the rain, floods, froggs and locusts will ever stop ) .

Got the final coat on today. Was so exicted that I had to run the kids out and show them their inheritance. Anyhow, I ended up with 4 coats of white and 3 of blue and called it good there. You'll have to excuse the Clampett paint booth.

LH she looks great and as far as the Clampet paint booth I been tellin these fellers how to make one forever but most of them just like baking in the sun or goin to their sisterinlaws if it rains . I will admit I didnt tell Andy how to do it till he was almost done LOL.

Finally got the deck done (mostly) and installed this weekend. Ended up painting it. Used Glidden Polyurethane porch and floor paint with a pouch of the Behr anti skid in it. Took a gallon to do 3 coats top and bottom. Still have to finish the door for the rod locker I added, then to the seat boxes and bench.
