Default Just bought a 99 bayliner capri 1950 just had some questions

Hey everybody im totally new to boating and yesterday i purchased a 99 bayliner capri. It runs good but does have some issues and thats what i had some questions about. First off the blowers in the back do not work when u flip the switch on the dash board nothing happens, is it normal for these to go bad so soon? All the guages seem to work except for the rpms, it doesnt work at all and does not even light up at all. I am so not good when it comes to out drives and things but im gonna explain this as best as i can, there is a small tube that connects with compression fittings on the back side of the outdrive it does seem somewhat internal but i can feel it with my fingers and it popped out and will not stay in when forced back in. I Think the tube is to transfer gear oil from the top to the bottom but im not sure and im sorry if i didnt explain it rite like i said im new at it. If anybody out there can help me out or give me some advice that would be great im a very handy car guy and should be able to work on this boat but it is definitly diffrent. Or if anyone in the greater philadelphia pennsylvania area is a marine mechanic and is trying to make a couple bucks on the side id be happy to pay to have this thing all done because id love to get it in the water. Thanks everybody!

I'll try to help out with the blowers and tach.

There should be a fuse box under the steering, behind the dash. You may have a blown fuse there. The fuse could be corroded or blown. It is possible the blower is bad, but I would start with the fuses, and also check the switch. Do you have any other problems with switched items? If so, that would lead me to think corrosion or a blown master fuse.

As for the tach, do the other gauges light up? You might want to check the connections on the back of the tach. Pull them off one at a time so you put them back in the place, but again this could be corrosion. Or loose connectors. The light could just be blown.

You might also check the wiring back at the coil. If there is corrosion there, the tach may not run.

I run an 89 Capri and have gone through the same electrical issues. Lost the blower when the bearing went bad and replaced it. But in your case, I'd really look at the electrical.

As for the stern unit, someone with experience with a similar unit will have to hop in.

Thanks for your help i have pulled it all apart and like you said there was lots of corrosion behind the dash panel and the blower was just a bad switch on the dash. Everything is working properly now thanks again!
